The microregion of Tolstejn derives its name from
the medieval castle of Tolstejn that once played an important role
near the northern border of the Czech Kingdom.
The microregion of Tolstejn was established
in 1999 (8 August 1999) with the purpose of uniting efforts and
financial means in promoting the touristic attractivity of the
microregion and increasing the number of visitors of the region.
Area and Population
- The association comprises an area of 13 987 ha with a
population of 24 305 inhabitants

Position
-
The region is situtated in the northernmost
part of the Czech Republic on the Czech-German border (Saxony).

The microregion extends to three reserved
territories - National Park Czech Switzerland, Protected
Landscape Area Elbe Sandstones and Protected Landscape Area of
Lusatia Mountains.

There is the European watershed of rivers
flowing to the Northern and to the Baltic Sea.

According to the statistics of the Czech
Hydrometeorologic Office the microregion belongs to areas with
the cleanest atmosphere in the Czech Republic.
