Jiřetín pod Jedlovou

The mining colony of Jiřetín pod Jedlovou was founded in 1548. The mining industry was unfortunately never lucrative so shortly after the foundation of the colony the original purpose of its existence faded away. Quite recently, in the last ten years, the community has undergone a period of unprecedented boom and was even awarded the title Village of the Year 1998 in the governmental competition of the Country Renewal Program. Due to the quantity of historical monuments (especially of the rural architecture) in the village it was declared a municipal monumental zone in 1992. Jiretin pod Jedlovou is a whole-year holiday resort of the western part of Lusatia Mountains.

Railway station Jedlova is a starting point for tourists and skiers visiting the area around Jedlova Mountain.

Jiretin pod Jedlovou cannot be thought apart from the pilgrimage church on the Holy Cross Mountain (563 m) built in the 18th century and declared a national cultural monument in 1969.

The Tolstejn castle, mentioned as early as in 1337, was a residential place of the Vartenberks of Duba and the Schleinitzs, prominent Czech aristicratic families. In 1642 the castle was burnt down by the Swedes and since that time it has never been reconstructed any more.

A boast of Jiretin pod Jedlovou is its sports facilities that have been developed for the last ten years. The summer sports facilities comprise a football field, tennis courts, beach sports fields, volleyball fields, minigolf, table-tennis, bodybuilding and sauna facilities. The winter sports facilities provide a ski-lift and downhill courses, there is also a number of running tracks.

The municipal museum (1998) is situated in the Baroque parsonage on the square and presents the history of mining in the region and the history of the Tolstej castle. A part of the museum, St. John the Evangelist Mine Drift (1781) was opened in 1999 as well as the nature trail in the Milirka valley.

The observation tower and hotel on the Jedlova mountain (774 m) with year-long operation belong to the most frequented places of the microregion.
